What if the conversations we avoid, are the ones that help us live more fully?
About the Retreat
The Good Goodbye Weekend was created for anyone who wants to live more intentionally.
Whether you’re a writer, artist, caregiver, teacher, parent, healthcare professional, entrepreneur, student, or simply someone curious about the conversations we too often avoid, this weekend is for you.
Together, we’ll gather in the mountains of Teton Valley to write, share meals, explore nature, and have honest conversations about life, love, grief, purpose, legacy, and what it means to make the most of the time we have.
Hosted by GiveWillow founder Janet Turkula alongside author and storyteller Darnell Lamont Walker and Lisa Pahl, co-creator of The Death Deck, this four-day experience invites participants to slow down, reflect on mortality, celebrate the people we love, and reconnect with what matters most.
Whether you attend a single workshop or spend the entire weekend with us, you’ll leave with meaningful conversations, thoughtful writing, and a renewed appreciation for the life you’re living today.

When Everything Falls Away: A Mortality Meditation
with Darnell Lamont Walker & Lisa Pahl
10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
$50 | Limited to 25 Participants
What might change if we spent a little time reflecting on our own mortality?
In this guided experience, Darnell Lamont Walker and Lisa Pahl will lead participants through a death meditation that invites them to imagine the gradual losses that often accompany aging, serious illness, and end-of-life. As we move through the meditation, participants will be asked to consider what it might feel like to lose certain physical abilities, roles, possessions, and aspects of identity.
Following the meditation, we’ll spend time writing, reflecting, and sharing about the experience. Together, we will consider questions such as: Who am I beyond what I do? What matters most when time is limited? What parts of myself endure even as circumstances change?
The experience concludes with an opportunity to reflect on how these insights might shape the way we live, love, and connect today.

What We Carry, What We Release: Reflections on Life, Loss, and What Matters Mostwith Lisa Pahl
3:30 PM – 6:00 PM
$50 | Limited to 30 Participants
Death, grief, and loss have a way of helping us see what matters most. In this experiential workshop, participants will be invited to slow down, connect with nature, and explore the relationships, fears, hopes, and truths that shape their lives. Through a guided nature-based reflection, participants will gather objects that symbolize grief, resilience, transformation, and what feels unfinished. Together, we will explore why we often avoid difficult conversations, drawing on lessons learned from hospice and end-of-life care, and engage in meaningful dialogue through thought-provoking prompts. Blending reflection, storytelling, conversation, and ceremony, this workshop creates space for deeper self-awareness, connection, and a renewed appreciation for the life we are living today.
Following the workshop, participants are invited to stay for an open Q&A with Lisa before gathering for dinner and fireside conversation.
